Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

Proverbs 16:24

I have an acquaintance who asks her children one question when they get argumentative or sassy. “Are you being sweet?”

That packs a punch!

The obvious answer is a resounding “No!” in those moments to be sure.

This is an interesting approach to discipline though. With just one question the motive of a heart is penetrated.

In contrast, when our words are laced with grace, the kindness of heart behind such words is exposed.

Do you struggle with this? Me too! This is especially difficult in the midst of tension or discipline.

God tells us however, that the way to instruction is through a graceful approach.

“gracious words promote instruction.”

Proverbs 16:21b

When discipline or correction is the goal, grace should be the vehicle.

When the goal is to try to get someone to understand our position on a subject, grace should be the vehicle.

Lord, let our lips reveal a heart that has been redeemed through your grace. Today Lord, would you help us treat others the way you treat us? Please Lord, let the world see you when they hear our words.

So, I ask you…

“Are you being sweet?”
