Proverbs 16:32
“Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.”
Of all the things you could rule over, ruling yourself may be both the most important and the most difficult.
In this passage, a warrior with the might to take an entire city at hand is not to be compared with taking oneself at hand.
It must be of great value to rule oneself.
Think of how true that really is and all of what it requires.
You have to be…
self-aware,
yielding to the Holy Spirit,
and
willing to practice time and time again.
Failure cannot afford to give way to defeat, but rather lead to additional alignments in tune with the Spirit.
Easy? No!
Taking over a city may be easier.
Worth it? Yes! Oh yes!
We never arrive in the area of self-control this side of eternity, but this is part of our journey with the Lord.
What areas of our life do we need to practice more self-control in? (Sorry, I know this is a probing question.)
Let’s pray today for God’s Grace to do the work that is better than ruling a city…ruling ourself.
